Vegemite

The Aussies have a peculiar likening for a spread from Kraft called Vegemite. Launched in 1923, as a nutritious paste made from the yeast extract left over from the manufacture of beer, it is wildly popular and sales are over 22 million jars a year. The product is banned from importation to the United States because it contains folate which is only permitted by the FDA in breads and cereals. Expatriates have been able to bring a few jars into the country for personal use, but not without much consternation created by border agents who inquisitively inspect it.
