Balo Vineyards
Balo is the Latin word for "bleat" as in bleating ("baa baa") of sheep. The early settlers in the Anderson Valley of California brought sheep with them to provide food and clothing and the area became known for sheep herding and wool production. The Balo estate vineyard is planted on a former sheep pasture. The Balo estate vineyard was planted in 2000 with the first crop in 2003. The vineyard manager is Anderson Valley Viticulture Services. The first crop was sold to Amici and later crops were shared between Amici and Lazy Creek. Ultimately the owners, Tim and Michelle Mullins, plan to build a winery on the property and produce their own estate bottled Pinot Noir. The vineyard is a little over 8 acres and is planted to clones 115, 777, 828, Pommard and Martini. |
