Gruet Winery
An established (since 1987) producer of sparkling and still wines located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Limited quantities of a regular and barrel select Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are offered. Nine different sparkling wines, both vintage and non-vintage, are produced. Gilbert Gruet, the founder, planted an experimental vineyard to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 1984 in Engle, 170 miles south of Albuquerque. At 4,300 feet, the vineyards are some of the highest in the United States. Sand and loamy soil and lack of humidity produce consistent fruit each year. The first vintage was 1987 and released in 1989. The initial wines received praise from critics and connoisseurs. By 2008, Gruet was selling 100,000 cases of wine and distribution was in all 48 staates. A tasting room is open Monday through Saturday. Tours are offered daily at 2:00 or by appointment. |
