Malm Cellars
Brendan Malm grew up close to where I live here in Orange County, California and left at an early age for Sonoma to learn winemaking. Malm Cellars is a one-man show. Brendan Malm not only makes the wines, but he also works the vineyards, designs the labels, and delivers the wine to his accounts in his diesel pick-up truck. This is pure, seat-of-the-pants Sonoma winemaking. He crafts both a regular and reserve Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. Note, the label is a peculiar robin’s egg blue, but a retailer told me it really stands out on the shelf and attracts women buyers like flies. The wines are sold through retail outlets.

Silky, noble and round with lovely strawberry flavors enhanced by spice and graham. Very fine-grain tannins and an appealing soft texture. The flavors trump the aromas. 2005 Malm Cellars Sonoma County Pinot Noir 14.4% alc., 118 cases, $19. Highly-touted and a Los Angeles Times Wine of the Week. A reserve release has been highly recommended in the press as well. · Classy bottle with wax capsule which is unusual for wine in this price range. The wine shows an impressive core of plums, blackberries, cassis, and spice. The aromatics are wanting, but this is not a wine made to contemplate, but to suck down with a good hamburger. ![]() 2005 Malm Cellars Sonoma County Pinot Noir 14.4% alc., $19. Surprisingly, the bottle sports a high-class wax cap, unusual for a valuepriced wine. · The aromatics are shy with hints of cassis and toast, but build in intensity with air time. A bit of heat peaks out as the wine warms in the glass. Easy to drink , this wine is soft in texture with red cherry and berry fruit. I wanted more structure and fruit, but I could not complain at this price. A simple Pinot that is perfectly fine for washing down a grilled hamburger. Reviewed May 13, 2007 ARTICLE »
