Primarius is Latin for "distinguished." Winemaker Haydn Mouat is a New Zealand native who began his career in Central Otago. He studied winemaking and viticulture at Lincoln University near Christchurch, New Zealand, and has held positions at Seven Hills Winery, Hartford Family Winery (CA), Hawthorne Mountain Winery (BC) and Gibbston Valley Winery (Queenstown, NZ).

An Oregon appellation Pinot Noir is produced from multiple vineyard sources in the 2011 vintage.
