Gehricke

A new in 2014 premium wine label from The Other guys (TOG) headed by August Sebastiani. This is the first prestige label for TOG and came about because of the bountiful harvest of 2012 and incredibly good Carneros Pinot Noir grapes became available.

Gehricke Road is located just outside the town of Sonoma a road that passes by some of the old vineyards that August Sebastiani's grandfather and father made famous.

Sebastiani initially worked with his winemaker brother-in-law Kendrick Coakley. When he moved on to focus on August's sister Mia's Kitchen project, the winemaker became Alex Beloz.

The team is focused on selecting fruit from top vineyards throughout Sonoma County. Gehricke is also set to release a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, a Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard the Sebastianis once owned, and a Sonoma Zinfandel in 2015. The first release was a 2012 Los Carneros Pinot Noir. Single vineyard wines are planned for the future.

The wines are highly allocated under the TOG umbrella.

2014 Gehricke Los Carneros Sonoma Pinot Noir

14.0% alc., 1,556 cases, $39. Small lot fermentations, aged 9 months in French oak barrels. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose exudes aromas of earth, mushroom, cigar, cherry, raspberry and cake spice. Modest in weight, with a black cherry and blackberry fruits theme overlain with generous tarry oak. The modest tannins make for easy drinking, but the oak is unduly intrusive, at least at this early stage. Score: 86. Reviewed June 5, 2015 ARTICLE »

14.0% alc., 1,556 cases, $39. Small lot ferments. Aged 9 months in French oak barrels. Vinted and bottled by The Other Guys, Sonoma. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Very giving fruit aromas of strawberry and cherry. Discreetly concentrated flavors of oakkissed black cherry with added accents of cola, sassafras and tobacco. Satiny in the mouth, with good balance and some finishing goodness. A little more oak-infused character than I prefer, but will please many especially at this modest price. Score: 88.
