2012 Carr Turner Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

14.0% alc., 195 cases, $50. Released March 2014. From a 21-acre organically farmed vineyard planted by Ryan Carr in 2000. Clones 113, 777 and Pommard. Aged 12 months in 15% new French oak. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Both earthy and fruity, this wine features mid to full-bodied dark red and black stone fruits that were picked at the peak of ripeness. The inviting mid palate attack is attention-grabbing, the tannins are firm but nicely tucked in, and the finish is very intense, long, and expansive. 14.3% alc., 635 cases, $32. A blend from Turner, Buona Terra and Moorman vineyards. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of black cherry, tea leaves and hay. Straightforward and accessible with flavors of black cherry and dark red berries accented by dusty oak in the background. Satiny on the palate with well-honed tannins and a fruity, dry finish. This vineyard has become a reliable source of outstanding Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir. Very Good. 14.5% alc., 249 cases, $45. Planted in 2000 by Ryan Carr. 15 acres of Pinot Noir. Yields just over 2 tons per acre. Clones 113, 777 and Pommard. Aged 12 months in French oak barrels. · Complex nose offering aromas of black raspberry pie filling, black cherry, leather glove and earth. Light on its feet with a discreetly concentrated essence of mixed red and black berries, added flavors of brewed tea and plums, with moderate ripe fruit tannins, well-integrated oak, a velvety texture and impressive presence on the lingering finish. Intended for consumption upon release. · Moderately deep reddish-purple color in the glass. Lovely and complex perfume featuring aromas of slightly confected black cherries, berries, cola, spice, pepper, and vanillin that persist over time in the glass. Darker stone and berry fruits are nicely spiced and offer a pleasing richness of flavor. A really tasty fruit-driven and user friendly Pinot that aims to please. Very good. 14.7% alc., 96 cases, $46. Unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. Welcoming aromas of black cherries, berry jam, purple rose petals and a hint of spice. Tasty core of dark red Pinot fruits with a subtle stem note and a slight confected accent. Nicely balanced with fine-grain tannins and a silky mouthfeel and some persistence of fruit aromas on the finish. A solid wine, but offering a monotone of fruit flavor. Good (+). This vineyard was established by Dennis Turner in 2000 and planted and cultivated by Ryan Carr, consisting of 15 acres of Pinot Noir, 3 acres of Pinot Gris and 3 acres of Syrah. Fourth harvest yielding 2 tons per acre. Aged for 12 months in 20% new oak. · Pleasing aromas of berry jam, cherries, spice and nutmeg gathering intensity with time in the glass. Delicious essence of black cherries with hints of red licorice and minerality leading to a tangy and lengthy finish highlighting bright cherry aromas. The slightly grainy tannins are well integrated and the lively acidity provides refreshing drinking. A well composed and impressive effort that really shows off the purity and vividness of Sta. 14.4% alc., 120 cases, $50, released spring 2009. Turner Vineyard is located between Melville and Babcock vineyards just east of Clos Pepe Vineyard. The vineyard is owned by Dennis Turner and was planted by and is farmed by Ryan Carr. There are 15 acres of Pinot Noir with some Syrah and Pinot Gris. Clones are 114, 667 and 777. · Restrained and brooding earthkissed black berry fruits with an underpinning of beef jerky and citrus. 14.8% alc., 125 cases, $55, Stelvin screw cap. Clones 667 (10% whole cluster), 114 and 777 (5% whole cluster). Aged 11 months in 50% new French oak. Unfined and unfiltered. · Very dark reddish-purple in the glass. Wooded dark fruit, spiced plum and smoke on the nose. Very taste core of dark berries, black cherries, and plums with an earthy undertone. Flashy and juicy with well-endowed fine-grain dry tannins. Showing admirable silkiness and elegance on the palate, this wine grew on me, and the more I sampled it, the more I liked it.
