Andrew Rich began his winemaking career at Bonny Doon Vineyards in California where he developed an interest in Rhone varietals. He head to the Northwest in 1995, intent on producing Rhone wines but found few sources for grapes at the time. He began making Pinot Noir in Oregon instead. He has a touch with Pinot Noir, producing wines that are never heavy-handed or overly extracted, and it now represents about one-third of his 6,000 case production. He was one of the first winemakers to produce Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley and Rhone varietals from Washington's Columbia Valley.

Andrew Rich produces three blended Pinot Noirs, drawn form six vineyards across five of the Williamette Valley's appellations. Cuvée B is composed of barrels that don't fit the Williamette Valley blend and is soft, forward and more suitable for early consumption. A Willamette Valley Reserve is produced in very good vintages.

Andrew Rich wines are produced at, and available for tasting at, the Carlton Winemaker's Studio in Carlton. The portfolio also includes Syrah and Rousanne.

2010 Andrew Rich Verbatim Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

13.5% alc., 833 , $30. Rich’s blend that best captures the vintage and the expression of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. Sourced from Ribbon Ridge, La Colina, and Momtazi Family vineyards. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels. · Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Immediately appealing upon opening the bottle with fresh red cherry and berry aromas accented with notes of spice and sandalwood. Dances lightly on the palate, and delivers plenty of Pinot flavor. Impeccably balanced with supple tannins, finishing with a cherry focus that lingers. Captures the 2010 Willamette Valley vintage perfectly. Reviewed September 12, 2012 ARTICLE »
