Jigar Wines

A husband and wife team, Jigar and Stephanie Patel started Jigar Wines in the Dry Creek Valley region of Sonoma County, enlisting the expertise of winemaker Erik Miller of Kokomo Wines to craft the wines initially.

In 2016, Josh Bartels, who previously was at Kokomo Winery, was appointed winemaker. Josh began a friendship with fellow classmate Jigar Patel at Purdue University. He has spent over ten years making wine in Sonoma county. Together they formed the Sedition label, a bottling of Pinot Noir from chenoweth Vineyard and Graham Family vineyards.

The lineup includes a Dry Creek Valley Cabernet and Zinfandel, and a Russian River Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The wines are sold through the website. A tasting room is located on Front Street in Forestville.

2016 Jigar Graham Family Vineyard Green Valley of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.2% alc., 319 cases, $55. Multiple clones including 23 and 777. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Appealing aromas of fresh Bing cherry and ripe strawberry. Dark red fruits are featured in this mid weight styled wine that shows good oak restraint and dog’s paw tannins. 2015 Jigar Peters Vineyard Russian River Valley Chardonnay

14.1% alc., 596 cases, $32. Peters Vineyard is a former Gravenstein apple orchard with Goldridge sandy loam soil. Clones 4 and Dijon 76. Aged in French oak barrels, 25% new. · The aromas of citrus, lees, wax, crushed wet gravel, nutty oak and toast arrive over time in the glass. Ripely fruited and richly stated in the mouth, with flavors of grilled lemon, pineapple, honey and caramel. Still, there is enough acidity to balance the fruit load. 2015 Jigar Peters Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.1% alc., 98 cases, $47. 100% Pommard. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Awkward aromas of earthy flora, bourbon, blackberry and raisin. Velvety in the mouth in a mid weight plus, fruit-driven style offering flavors of black fruits including prune. Lacking in vigor due to demure acidity and displaying more toasty oak than I prefer. 2015 Jigar Graham Family Vineyard Vintner’s Reserve Green Valley of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.2% alc., 195 cases, $65. Release November 2018. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Leading off are aromas of black cherry, forest floor, dark bittersweet chocolate and a hint of vanilla. Boldly flavored, with a core of dark Bing cherry fruit that saturates the palate, carrying through a persistent finish. 2014 Jigar Peters Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

14.1% alc., $47. From a vineyard farmed by Randy Peters, a pioneering winegrower in the Sebastopol Hills subregion of the Russian River Valley/Sonoma Coast. Gold Medal at 2016 Sonoma County Harvest Fair. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Drinking beautifully now, with vivid aromas of black cherry, dark raspberry coulis, and spice. Juicy and satisfying, with a mid weight core of fresh black cherry fruit back by deft oak integration. Impressive balance with a pleasing finish. Score: 92. Reviewed June 4, 2017

2009 Jigar Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.3% alc., 465 cases, $32. Name (“jigg-er”) is Urdu/Hindi for symbol of love and affection, courage, heart and one who lives life to the fullest. Proprietor is Jigar and Stephanie Patel. Winemaker is Erik Miller of Kokomo Wines. Inaugural release. Clones 667, 777 and 114. Aged in 25% new French oak barrels. · Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. The nose is closed for business and no fruit ever emerges. Flavors of brandied cherries, herbs and cola finishing with a cherry riff, bright acidity and a bit of heat. The medium weighted fruit carries a roasted, confected quality. The wine seems a little disjointed. Decent.
