Angela Estate

Angela Estate started as a single Pinot Noir produced from a single vineyard, Clawson Creek Vineyard, in the Yamhill-Carlton appellation of the Willamette Valley. The owners are two husband-and-wife teams who have taken their passion for wine to the next level buying and developing a new vineyard and proudly releasing their first wine in 2008. The 50-acre estate was planted in 2006 and 2007 and renamed Angela Estate Vineyard. The owners acquired the Abbott Claim Vineyard as well.

Antony Beck is part of the family that owns Graham Beck Wines of South Africa and he oversees the family’s thoroughbred horse breeding farm in Kentucky. His wife, Angela Beck, is an entrepreneur herself, owner of a designer table linens and accessory company called Pomegranate, Inc.. Robert Rosenstein is a wine and spirits retailer, also located in Kentucky, and his wife, Dr. Kim Clawson Rosenstein is a practitioner of integrative medicine.

Beck met up with noted winemaker Ken Wright who led them to a special site for Pinot Noir located on a ridge in the Yamhill-Carlton District. One of the unique features of the site is the consistent layer of 30 to 36 inch top soil throughout the site. Under the direction of vineyard manager, Mark Gould, planting of 21 acres started in 2006, with another 13 acres following suite in 2007. The clones are Dijon 115, 777 and Wädenswil 2A.

In March of 2008, the inaugural Angela Clawson Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir was released, and a second bottling from the Abbott Claim Vineyard was added with the 2012 vintage. Angela wines are the only ones Ken Wright produces outside of his eponymous label.

Angela Estate wines partnered with Jackson Family Wines to take the wines into Europe and Asia.

2014 Angela Estate Yamhill-Carlton Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

13.7% alc., $36. this 34-acre vineyard was planted in 2006 to Wädenswil, 777 and 115 clones. Marine sedimentary soils. The vineyard is owned by South African wine producer Antony Beck as a gift to his wife Angela. Production of the wine is overseen by Ken Wright. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Aromas of berry patch, black cherry, dried herbs and damp mulch lead to a an elegantly styled, but powerfully flavored middleweight wine featuring a delicious core of black cherry fruit. Forward and giving, with impeccable balance and an intensely-aromatic, cherry-driven finish. Classic Oregon Pinot Noir to enjoy now or over the next ten years. Score: 94. 2012 Angela Estate Abbott Claim Vineyard Yamhill-Carlton Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

14.0% alc., $60. The 16-acre Abbot Claim vineyard was planted in 2001 to Pommard, 777 and 115 clones. It is part of the original John F. Abbott Donation Land Claim. Soils are marine sedimentary. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of cherries, spice and wood lead to a discreetly concentrated core of red cherries and red berries with a touch of baking spices. 2009 Angela Clawson Creek Vineyard Oregon Pinot Noir

13.5% alc., $45. A tall, very heavy bottle. Clones 777, Wädenswil and 115. The winemaker is Ken Wright. · Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. Savory nose offering aromas of mushrooms, wet leaf, oak and pharmaceutical notes with dark red cherries and berries in the background. Redder fruits are featured with a touch of blueberries, pomegranate and spice. Fairly silky on the palate, but exhibiting firm prodigious tannins, finishing juicy with a bright nerve of acidity. 2006 Angela Clawson Creek Vineyard Yamhill-Carlton District Oregon Pinot Noir

13.5% alc., 400 cases, $50. Aged 10 months 60% new French oak. · Dark reddish-purple robe. Fragrant aromas of black cherry, plum, prune and toasted oak entice. A plush and rich palate of black cherry, cassis and blackberries with a subtle woodsy note. Smooth with soft tannins and a healthy acid spine. A compelling wine of great merit.
