2016 Dutton-Goldfield Dutton Ranch - Freestone Hill Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.8% alc., pH 3.54, TA 0.62, 627 cases, $72. This vineyard is located in the extreme southwestern corner of the Russian River Valley on the coastal side of the Petaluma wind gap at the climatic margin for ripening grapes. Planted in 1996 and 1997 above the little town of Freestone. Tiny grape berries with thick skins produce highly concentrated wines. A combination of the 1996 planting of 115, 2A and 114 co-fermented and the 1997 planting of 667. Although fermented separately, the two blocks were blended soon after draining. No press wine in this blend. 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, open-top fermentation. Aged 17 months in French oak barrels, 55% new. · Dark garnet color in the glass. A big wine with graceful intentions offering aromas of fertile earth, spice, boysenberry and blackberry. Full-bodied flavors of sappy purple and black fruits flood the mouth with goodness. There are tones of earth and iron in the background. The supportive oak and tannins keep the wine sleek and honorable. The bodacious fruit shows uncommon persistence on the finish. Score: 93. 2013 Dutton Goldfield Dutton Ranch Freestone Hill Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.9% alc., pH 3.65, TA 0.57, 478 cases, $72. This vineyard is located in the extreme southwestern corner of the Russian River Valley appellation on the coastal side of the Petaluma gap and was planted in 1996 (115, 2A and 114) and 1997 (667). 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, aged 17 months in French oak barrels, 55% new. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is exhilarating, with generous aromas of black raspberry, black cherry and baking spices which elevate over time in the glass. The sappy black raspberry and blackberry fruits have a majestic presence on the palate with the luscious flavors expanding in the mouth and persisting through a lengthy finish. 2011 Dutton-Goldfield Dutton Ranch Freestone Hill Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.5% alc., pH 3.57, TA 0.60, 503 cases, $72. This vineyard is located on a south-facing hillside above the town of Freestone at the far southwestern edge of the Russian River Valley only a few miles inland from Bodega Bay. A very cold climate very suited to Dijon clones. Yields are low with tiny berries and thick skins. Aged 17 months in 55% new French oak barrels. · Medium reddish-purple hue in the glass. Shy, but very lovely aromas of wild berry preserves, rose petals and spice. Delicious essence of blackberries and black plums with a wonderful spice presence which makes itself more known over time in the glass. An earthy, sous-bois underpinning adds interest. The svelte tannins are well balanced and there is admirable length to the finish. Still young and somewhat closed, but clearly an extraordinary wine. Score: 94. 2009 J Vineyards Freestone Hill Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.3% alc., pH 3.70, TA 0.57, 100 cases, $60. This vineyard is farmed by the Dutton family and overlooks the community of Freestone. The clones are 113, 115 and 667. · Moderate reddish-purple hue in the glass. Reserved aromas of plum pudding, sage, spice and rose petals. Soft, creamy and delicate on the palate with shy flavors of purple berries and black cherries, slightly oaked. Picks up intensity and interest over time in the glass. 2007 Dutton-Goldfield Freestone Hill Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.5% alc., 537 cases, $58. · Fruity nose of grapes and berries with notes of spice and Coca-Cola. Lush, ripe and sweet mouth coating fruits with a long and powerful fruity finish. 14.3% alc., $40. · Interesting aromas that change in the glass consisting of fresh berries, forest floor, pine, smoke and mint. Juicy black cherry and dark red berry core with finegrained tannins. Aged 17 months in 55% new French oak. · Deep and haunting aromatics featuring black cherries and wild blackberries. A plush mouthful of dark Pinot extract with a hint of herbs, spice and earth. Succulent and robust with a long, scented aftertaste. Beautifully balanced, clean and pure. Power without flab. This one makes you want to clap your hands.
