A Tribute to Burt Williams & Morning Dew Ranch

“It’s hard to overstate Burt Williams’ influence;
since its creation, Williams Selyem has been the mothership of Sonoma Pinot Noir.”

Jan McInerney, Wall Street Journal

Winemaking is a craft that many have mastered. But as with any dedicated pursuit, there are a gifted few with extraordinary intuition and as a result are more adept at the craft than others. Looking back at the evolution of the modern era of California Pinot Noir from its humble beginnings in the 1950s, there have been many contributors, but Burt Williams stands out as an icon, a consummate winemaker worthy of veneration. I count myself as one of an army of devotees who have had a fanatical reverence for his wines. A tribute and an attempt to encapsulate a legacy are in order.

As I was composing this tribute, Burt had passed away at the age of 79 years on December 12, 2019. It was with a heavy heart that I completed this tribute that also became a eulogy.
