2009 Donum Estate Thomas Carneros Pinot Noir

14.4% alc., 101 cases, $100. This bottle honored Thomas Ferguson’s 100th birthday. 100% de-stemmed, native primary fermentation, aged 16 months in 1-year-old French oak barrels. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. A terrific wine that defies its 11-year-old age, drinking like a new release but with pliant tannins and oak faded into the background. Bold dark fruits, brown spices, anise and leather are featured on the nose and palate. A robust wine that seduces with a mouthfeel that is smooth as a baby’s bottom. An appropriate memorial to Thomas. Score: 94. Reviewed August 29, 2020 WINERY » ARTICLE »

2007 Robert Stemmler Ferguson Block Carneros Pinot Noir

14.4% alc., pH 3.52, $44. From the oldest portion of the Donum Estate planted in 1974 to Martini selection on St. George rootstock. Yields are one tone per acre. 100% de-stemmed, native fermentation and Burgundian yeast isolate inoculation. Aged 11 months in 35% new, tight-grain French oak. · Distinctive aromas of cassis, rose petals, green bean, tar and compost bin. Rustic and earthy with a heart of black currants and creme de cassis. Silky smooth with balancing tannins and bright acidity on the finish. Takes on more charm with time in the glass but remains a man’s wine. Good. Reviewed April 23, 2010 WINERY » ARTICLE »

2004 Donum Estate Carneros Pinot Noir

Unreleased, bottled January 2006. Blending trials found that the addition of 10% Ferguson Block fruit to the estate juice produced the preferred wine. · This is an outrageous Pinot. The perfume of spicy cherries, licorice and sandalwood is intoxicating. A little less earthy and more fruit forward than the 2003 vintage. The balance is spot on and the peacock tail at the finish seems to linger forever. Heaven sent. Reviewed July 10, 2006 WINERY »

2003 Robert Stemmler Ferguson Block Carneros Pinot Noir

250 cases, $45, sold out. · The aromatics are unique featuring eucalyptus, herbs and dried cherries. Dark fruits dominate the rich, round palate. The tangy finish is plush with dark cherries, black plums and spice. This Pinot is a real lip smacker and brings the Robert Stemmler label to a new lofty level. Reviewed July 10, 2006 WINERY »
